Annalena Baerbock Elected President of UN General Assembly

A fair mediator for a fractured world

In a landmark moment for international diplomacy, former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has been elected President of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, securing 167 votes and becoming the first woman from Western Europe — and only the fifth woman ever — to lead the world’s most representative forum.

Baerbock takes the helm at a time of seismic global tensions: wars in Ukraine and Gaza, waning progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, and rising frustration with the UN Security Council’s veto gridlock.

Yet, with her call for unity under the theme “Better Together”, Baerbock pledged to be a “fair mediator” for all 193 member states.

Outlining priorities — strengthening UN efficiency, accelerating Agenda 2030, and transforming the Assembly into a truly inclusive space — she invoked the urgency of the UN80 reform push and a vision of a bolder, more responsive multilateral system.

With crises mounting and global consensus fraying, the eyes of the world now turn to the woman tasked with building bridges across fault lines.
