Pope Francis has elevated Argentinian Archbishop Vinko Bokalič Iglič, of Slovenian descent, and Belgrade Archbishop Ladislav Nemet as two of the 21 new cardinals during a consistory held at the Vatican on 7 December.
Born on 11 June 1952 in Buenos Aires to Slovenian parents who emigrated to Argentina in 1949, Bokalič Iglič has maintained strong ties to his Slovenian heritage and is fluent in the language. A member of the Lazarist Order since 1970, he studied philosophy and theology before being ordained as a priest in 1978. His career has included various roles, such as priest and missionary, showcasing his dedication to the Church and its mission.
Ladislav Nemet, the Archbishop of Belgrade, has been a prominent figure in the Catholic Church in Serbia. His elevation as cardinal marks a significant moment for the Church in the region, further highlighting its importance in fostering dialogue and community.
