Slovenia and Italy Unite Through Basketball

A new basketball court has opened on the border between Nova Gorica, Slovenia, and Gorizia, Italy, replacing fences and wires with hoops.

Part of the European Capital of Culture project, the court features two parallel half-courts: one where players shoot towards Italy, the other towards Slovenia. The initiative brings together the two countries and basketball legends Goran Dragić and Luigi “Gigi” Datome, former NBA players and long-time national team captains.

The court, built in an existing park near Europe Square and Nova Gorica Train Station, has a lowered playing surface with seating for spectators.

The 570-square-meter venue is open to the public, fully accessible, and includes QR codes linking to online basketball drills, as well as an app to connect players and schedule games.

Costing just over €400,000, the project was funded mainly by the Nova Gorica municipality, with contributions from the Slovenian state and the Goran Dragić Foundation. Dragić expressed his joy at the court’s completion, emphasizing its symbolic role in uniting the two countries and shared values with Datome.
