European Parliament Stresses Quality Over Speed in Western Balkans Growth Plan

David McAllister of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee underscored the importance of diligent review over hasty endorsement of the EU's new €6 billion Western Balkans growth and reform initiative

David McAllister, Chairman of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, emphasized the need for thorough scrutiny rather than swift approval of the European Commission’s proposed growth and reform plan for the Western Balkans. Speaking at a joint session of the Foreign Affairs and Budget Committees, McAllister highlighted the importance of ensuring the legal integrity and accountability of the proposed €6 billion financial aid package for the region.

Despite efforts to expedite the review of this significant document, McAllister pointed out that the Commission’s late submission has necessitated a more detailed examination to meet agreed timelines. With a deadline of February 15th for amendments, the European Parliament is committed to ensuring the proposal not only meets legal standards but also effectively supports the Western Balkans’ developmental needs.
