Fearne is the first Maltese foreign minister to make an official visit to Montenegro since the country gained independence in 2006. The visit comes as Montenegro and Malta mark 20 years of diplomatic relations, established shortly after Montenegro’s independence.
Montenegrin officials highlighted Malta’s strong and consistent support for the country’s EU accession process, describing the two countries as close partners and friends.
Montenegro, which opened EU accession negotiations in 2012, has set its sights on completing the process and becoming the next EU member within its planned timeframe.
The visit also underlines the importance Montenegro places on support from EU member states as it seeks to advance reforms and complete the remaining steps on its path toward membership.
