Croatia has officially been declared mine free, marking the completion of a decades long demining effort and the fulfillment of its commitments under the Ottawa Convention. The milestone represents a significant step in post war recovery and national safety.
Large areas of Croatian territory remained contaminated with landmines following the 1990s conflict, posing risks to residents, infrastructure and economic development.
Through sustained clearance operations, international cooperation and substantial financial investment, authorities have now removed the remaining suspected hazardous areas.
Officials described the achievement as historic, noting that it enhances public safety, supports tourism and agriculture, and closes an important chapter in Croatia’s post war reconstruction.
