Montenegro Unveils New Artery Through the Mountains

A 23-kilometre stretch of modern highway carves a new path through Montenegro's dramatic hinterland, marking the first step in a transformative route linking Nikšić to the Bay of Kotor

In a major boost to Montenegro’s infrastructure and tourism strategy, the first phase of the long-anticipated Cetinje–Čevo–Nikšić highway has been officially completed.

The newly constructed 23-kilometre section features a 7.7-metre-wide carriageway, safety-enhancing third lanes for overtaking, and a new junction with the Podgorica–Cetinje route.

Executed by the Nikšić-based AD “Mehanizacija i programat” at a cost exceeding €33 million, the road not only improves access to the remote village of Čevo but also forms a strategic bypass around Cetinje.

The project eases traffic to popular destinations like Lovćen National Park and Kotor by diverting vehicles away from urban congestion.

Next up: extending the route toward Nikšić and building a road from Krstac to Kotor—an ambitious plan that promises to revolutionise travel across Montenegro’s mountainous heartland.
