Hungarian Retail Chain Family Market Expands into Serbia

Macedonian, French, Italian, and Bosnian retailers also set sights on Serbian market

The Serbian retail sector is witnessing a surge in international interest, with Hungary’s Family Market leading the charge. Established in 1998 in Kecskemét, the company has announced the opening of its first stores in Serbia, focusing initially on multiple locations across Vojvodina. Family Market operates a robust network in Hungary, including wholesale and franchise partnerships, and its entry signals a strategic push into new markets.

Retail Serbia reports that other major players are also eyeing the Serbian market. North Macedonia’s Stokomak, one of the largest retail chains in its home country, plans to open its stores in Serbia within the first quarter of this year.

Additionally, French giant Carrefour, represented by Greece’s AVE Group, Italian discount chain Eurospin, and Tropic, a retail group based in the Republic of Srpska, have announced plans to establish a presence in Serbia.

The influx of international retailers reflects Serbia’s growing appeal as a strategic hub in the Balkans, driven by its expanding consumer base and increasing market potential. This wave of investments is expected to heighten competition and diversify offerings for Serbian shoppers.
