Croatia’s Gvardiol and Modrić Among the World’s Best Footballers

A New Generation, But Modrić Still Leads the Way

The Guardian’s annual list of the world’s top 100 footballers has once again recognized two Croatian stars, with Joško Gvardiol and Luka Modrić claiming spots in the prestigious ranking.

Gvardiol, now ranked 45th, has seen an improvement from last year’s 54th position, though his career high remains 31st, achieved in 2022. The 22-year-old defender’s rise can be attributed to his impressive versatility and attacking contributions, netting several goals in 2024 from his left-back position.

However, it is the enduring brilliance of Luka Modrić that remains most captivating. Despite being 39 years old, the Croatian captain has dropped to 58th, falling 25 spots from 2023. His remarkable longevity in elite football, despite lacking the physical attributes of some contemporaries, is a testament to his unparalleled vision, technical skill, and control of the game.

As the Guardian highlights, it’s astonishing that at his age and size, he continues to perform at the highest level, with his skill and intelligence unquestionable.
