China Sets Records in Solar Panel Exports, Netherlands Largest European Buyer

China has set a new record in solar panel exports, shipping 120,427 megawatts (MW) of panels in the first half of the year, with nearly half of this production heading to Europe, according to the Ember institute

Chinese solar panel exports to Europe accounted for 43%, or 52,158 MW, despite a 20% decrease from the same period last year due to high interest rates, economic growth concerns, and strained relations with China.

The Netherlands remained the leading market for Chinese solar panels, importing a total of 23,421 MW in the first six months of this year. Brazil was the second-largest market, receiving 10,511 MW of panels in the first half of 2024. In total, Chinese manufacturers delivered 6.3% more solar panels, measured in capacity, than in the previous half-year record set in the first half of 2023.

Since the beginning of 2020, China has exported around 720,000 MW of solar panels. The prices of Chinese solar panels have halved compared to their 2022 average, making them the most affordable components available globally.
