Slovenia has assumed the rotating chair of the UN Security Council for December, marking the final month of its two-year term as a non-permanent member. The country aims to spotlight ongoing crises in the Middle East and Africa, while also leading a high-level debate on the role of the next UN secretary-general. Slovenian Ambassador Samuel Žbogar emphasized that many UN members, including Slovenia, believe the time has come for the first woman to hold the position.
During its presidency, Slovenia will oversee several key events, including the Security Council’s first mission to Syria and Lebanon. Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon will chair meetings on UN–OSCE cooperation and the situation in Afghanistan, with a particular focus on women’s rights. Although not part of the official programme, discussions on Ukraine are also expected. Slovenia’s seat will pass to Latvia on 1 January, with officials in Ljubljana highlighting the country’s strengthened reputation and diplomatic achievements over the past two years.
