Ljubljana Airport Lands Major Upgrade with New Taxiway J

With over €5 million invested, Ljubljana Airport strengthens its position as a key aviation hub in the region

Ljubljana’s Jože Pučnik Airport has completed a major infrastructure project — the construction of Taxiway J, a 170-metre connector designed to enhance manoeuvrability for large aircraft and improve overall operational efficiency.

The €5.2 million investment, one of the largest in runway infrastructure in a decade, marks a strategic step by operator Fraport Slovenija to boost safety standards and competitiveness.

Boštjan Šijanec, head of infrastructure, said the upgrade cements the airport’s status as one of the most advanced in the region.

Since 2014, more than €83 million has been poured into the airport, including a new €21 million passenger terminal opened in 2021.

Further upgrades, including a revamped aircraft apron, are set for completion by 2026, with sustainability in focus for future investments.

After years of turbulence post-Adria Airways’ collapse and the pandemic, Ljubljana Airport is seeing steady recovery, handling over 1.4 million passengers in 2024 — up 13.3% year-on-year — with new routes to Manchester, Barcelona and Gran Canaria launching this autumn.
