Once the jewel of Yugoslavia’s merchant fleet, Slovenia’s iconic shipping company, Splošna Plovba, has quietly slipped beneath the surface.
Founded in 1954 with a single ship, the Koper-based firm grew into a maritime powerhouse during the socialist era, commanding a fleet of Slovenian-named vessels and employing over 1,600 workers at its peak.
But after Slovenia’s independence, the company struggled to stay afloat.
Weighed down by Japanese ship loans and shrinking markets, Splošna pivoted to bulk cargo.
In 2007, a controversial privatisation handed control to Germany’s Peter Döhle Schiffahrts, triggering a decade-long decline.
Revenues plunged from over €100 million in 2013 to just €35 million in 2016, alongside €145 million in losses.
By 2023, its last Slovenian-named ship was sold. In July 2025, liquidation was officially registered – ending a 71-year legacy.
Once a symbol of seafaring ambition, Splošna Plovba now exists only in the memory of the Adriatic.
