Half a Century of HE Piva Powers Montenegro’s Energy Future

One of Montenegro’s most important energy facilities marks 50 years of operation, highlighting its enduring role in national development and energy security

The hydropower plant HE Piva celebrated its 50th anniversary in Plužine, bringing together representatives of Montenegro’s power utility EPCG, local authorities, partner companies, and generations of employees who have contributed to the facility’s success. Since entering operation in 1976, HE Piva has remained one of the cornerstones of Montenegro’s electricity system, providing reliable energy while supporting the country’s broader economic development.

President of the Board of Directors of EPCG, Milutin Đukanović

Speakers at the anniversary event emphasised that HE Piva’s legacy extends beyond power generation. EPCG officials described the plant as a symbol of long-term planning, technical excellence and responsible resource management, while also pointing to the need for new investments in renewable energy and energy infrastructure. The celebrations included expert panel discussions, environmental initiatives and awards for outstanding employees, underscoring the plant’s continued importance as Montenegro pursues a more sustainable and secure energy future.
