Slovenian Startup Wins Top Award For DNA Data Storage Technology

The innovation could redefine long-term digital data storage and cybersecurity protection.

BioSistemika won the top prize at the Podim Pitching Competition in Maribor with DATANA, a patented technology designed to store digital data in synthetic DNA. Organizers described the innovation as a breakthrough solution capable of offering far greater durability and security than traditional digital storage systems.

Founded in 2010 as a spin-off of the National Institute of Biology, BioSistemika today employs nearly 50 people and develops software for laboratories and scientific equipment manufacturers. The company gained international recognition after DATANA secured support from major European innovation programmes, including the European Innovation Council Accelerator and Pathfinder initiatives, as well as NATO’s DIANA programme.

According to the developers, the technology allows data to be preserved for thousands of years while remaining resistant to cyberattacks, physical damage and digital surveillance. Company representatives said the award is an important step as they seek investors and prepare to commercialize the technology.

The Podim conference, one of the leading startup and technology events in Central Europe and the Western Balkans, gathered more than 1,100 participants from 34 countries this year, including startups, investors, venture capital funds, and technology companies.
