Zagreb is preparing to introduce what is being billed as Europe’s first robotaxi service, as part of a broader push to modernise urban transport and embrace emerging technologies. The project brings together major global players, including Uber and autonomous driving firm Pony.ai, alongside local company Verne, signalling a significant step toward integrating self-driving vehicles into everyday city life.
The initiative is expected to roll out in the coming years, with plans to deploy autonomous vehicles designed to operate safely within complex urban environments.
Backed by investment and regulatory support, the project reflects Croatia’s ambition to position itself as an innovation hub in Southeast Europe, particularly in the fast-evolving field of smart mobility.
Beyond its technological significance, the robotaxi service could reshape public transport dynamics in Zagreb, offering a flexible, on-demand alternative to traditional systems. If successful, the model may serve as a blueprint for other European cities exploring autonomous transport solutions, at a time when governments are increasingly balancing innovation with safety, infrastructure readiness and public trust.
