The Belgrade Waterfront development has unveiled plans to repurpose the iconic halls of the Belgrade Fair (Sajam), preserving them as cultural heritage sites and integrating them into a vibrant new urban district.
Under the latest proposal, Hall 1 will be transformed into a modern opera house and theatre venue, featuring multiple performance spaces designed for opera, theatre, ballet and cabaret. This venue is set to become a cultural centerpiece surrounded by new public squares, cafés and dynamic indoor-outdoor spaces.
Meanwhile, Halls 2 and 3 will maintain their architectural character while being adapted for a mix of community-oriented uses, such as a school, kindergarten, modern healthcare facilities and cultural amenities. An international architectural competition will be launched to select innovative and community-focused designs that honour the buildings’ heritage.
The effort to repurpose the former fairgrounds comes as part of a broader expansion of Belgrade Waterfront, which aims to connect this area with pedestrian zones, new parks and riverfront promenades, enhancing public access and urban life in this part of the city.
