Montenegro Celebrates Njegoš Day for the First Time

On 13th November in 1813, Petar II Petrović Njegoš, a Montenegrin bishop, poet, philosopher, and statesman, was born in Njeguši.

Andrija Mandić, President of the Montenegrin Parliament, extended Njegoš Day greetings to all citizens of Montenegro, highlighting its rightful status as a national cultural holiday.

“The indelible mark Njegoš left on the essence of our nation is profound, and his works form the backbone of our national culture, literacy, and spirituality,” Mandić emphasized.

Deputy Prime Minister Aleksa Bečić noted that Njegoš Day is not just a time to remember the great poet and ruler’s works, but also a moment to collectively celebrate the best Montenegro offers – its culture, history, and spirituality.

Bečić emphasized that Njegoš’s spirit and immortal words should continue to inspire, educate, and lead towards a future where Montenegrin culture will flourish and be recognized and valued worldwide.

Culture and Media Minister Tamara Vujović stated that Montenegro, through Njegoš’s works, opens itself to the world, demonstrating that boundaries cannot limit the universality of the human spirit. Njegoš Day is an opportunity to celebrate the values that shaped the past and will illuminate the future, as well as to recognize the significance of national culture as a solid pillar of the state.

The 13th Njegoš Days concluded in Nikšić.

A ceremonial academy titled “The Great Assembly on the Eve of Njegoš Day” was held at the Parish House.

The Montenegrin-Littoral Metropolitanate reiterated the idea of restoring Njegoš’s Chapel on Lovćen, and local authorities announced the decision to erect a monument to Njegoš in Nikšić.
