Rijeka Schools Replace Bakery Snacks with Healthier Options

Rijeka's primary schools are replacing traditional bakery snacks with healthier options to promote better nutrition among students

Starting next term, primary schools in Rijeka, Croatia, will remove doughnuts, sweet buns, pizza, and other bakery items from students’ snack menus, replacing them with healthier options like oats with honey and cinnamon, probiotic yoghurt, vegetable omelettes, and whole-grain bread with tuna and cottage cheese spread.

This transformation is part of Rijeka’s new approach to school snacks, aimed at offering more nutritious, varied meals for primary students. Iva Erceg, Rijeka’s Head of Education and Youth Affairs, noted that a team of nutritionists and school representatives developed the new menus to ensure balanced, wholesome options.

To support the initiative, a centralised ingredient purchasing system has been introduced, streamlining supply for all schools. The goal is to provide meals packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and energy to support children’s growth and academic success.
