World’s Steepest Cable Car Opens in Switzerland

Fully automated cable car climbs 775 meters in just four minutes

Switzerland has unveiled the world’s steepest cable car, connecting the villages of Stechelberg and Mürren in the Bernese Oberland. The engineering marvel ascends dramatic cliffs in just four minutes, reaching a height of 775 meters along a 1.5-kilometer route.

Each of the two cabins accommodates up to 85 passengers, with the capacity to transport 800 people per hour. Due to the steep incline, the cabins are suspended on 11-meter-long arms, allowing them to navigate the terrain seamlessly. Supported by just two towers, the cable car operates at a speed of seven meters per second and is fully automated, requiring no staff on board.

Equipped with cameras and sensors for constant monitoring, the system ensures safety and efficiency, according to Swissinfo. This latest innovation showcases Switzerland’s continued leadership in cutting-edge infrastructure and breathtaking travel experiences.
