UNESCO Adds Sevdalinka to Intangible Cultural Heritage List

Sevdalinka, Bosnia and Herzegovina's beloved traditional folk song, has earned a place on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, highlighting the nation's rich cultural traditions

Sevdalinka, the traditional urban folk song of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been officially inscribed on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced.

This recognition was approved during the session of UNESCO’s Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage and marks a significant acknowledgment of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s rich cultural legacy.

The nomination of sevdalinka for UNESCO’s list was first proposed in 2017 by the Tuzla Association of Music Artists, which brought the idea into public focus.

Bosnia and Herzegovina now has six cultural assets on UNESCO’s heritage list, including Lipizzaner horse breeding, Konjic woodcarving, the harvesting of Iva grass on Ozren, the mowing competition in Kupres, and Zmijanje embroidery.

Additionally, the Nevesinje Olympics, a traditional sports event, has been nominated for inclusion on the prestigious list.
