Trump Eases Tariffs on Serbia: Strategic Shift or Political Signal?

Tariffs drop to 2% as Trump signals a thaw in US-Serbia trade

In a surprising shift, US President Donald Trump has announced that tariffs on Serbian exports to the United States will be reduced to just 2%, effective 1 August 2025.

The announcement, made via Trump’s Truth Social platform and in a letter to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, marks a stark reversal from his earlier rhetoric.

Just months ago, in April, Trump threatened to impose a 37% tariff on Serbian goods, citing what he called an “unfair and non-reciprocal” trade relationship.

Now, he frames the reduction as a strategic gesture to encourage deeper economic cooperation, noting that Serbian companies establishing production in the US could be exempt from tariffs altogether.

This abrupt pivot—from punitive to conciliatory—raises questions about whether the shift signals a broader policy recalibration.

For Serbia’s exporters, however, it offers immediate relief and a potential opening for renewed trade momentum.
