Slovenian Railways Soars: Passenger Numbers Hit 15M, Aiming for 25M by 2028

Slovenian Railways, the national rail operator, has reported a substantial increase in passenger numbers since 2021, reaching over 15 million in 2023.

This surge is attributed to the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, the introduction of new trains, and attractive travel offers. The company aims to boost this figure to 25 million by 2028.

In 2022, passenger traffic on Slovenian trains grew by over 20%, surpassing pre-Covid levels of 2019, and continued to climb in 2023. The rise in passengers was noted in both domestic and international travel sectors.

One of the key factors driving this growth is the addition of 52 new train sets, with the latest batch received in September 2022. Additionally, an order placed in June for 20 more trains, expected to be delivered by 2025, will further enhance travel quality on the Slovenian railway network.

Plans for 2026 include the arrival of four engines and 20 carriages, aimed at significantly improving international transport capabilities. Looking ahead, Slovenian Railways envisions incorporating high-speed trains equipped with tilting technology, and investing in upgrades such as double-tracking and electrification of regional lines.

The upcoming Ljubljana Passenger Terminal, set to be completed in 2026, is anticipated to increase the rail network’s capacity by a third. This expansion is especially significant for daily commuters to Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia.
