Slovenian basketball star Luka Dončić has been appointed as a Community Ambassador for Los Angeles ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the city’s host committee announced. The 26-year-old Lakers guard joins Magic Johnson in promoting the tournament and celebrating LA’s diverse sports culture.
Dončić, who has long expressed his passion for football, said he was honored by the role. “The World Cup is the biggest event in sports. I’ve always watched soccer since I was a kid — it’s part of my life,” he said, praising Los Angeles as the perfect city to host the event given its multicultural energy and growing soccer fandom.
The 2026 World Cup will take place across 16 cities in the US, Mexico, and Canada. Slovenia’s qualification hopes remain uncertain as they prepare for crucial November matches against Kosovo* and Sweden.
