Slovenia’s automotive market recorded a sharp increase in March, with new data from the Chamber of Commerce showing car sales rising by nearly 25% year-on-year. The surge was largely driven by a dramatic rise in demand for electric vehicles, which grew by 142% compared to the same period last year and accounted for almost 18% of all new registrations, marking a significant acceleration after surpassing the 10% threshold in 2025.
A standout development was the strong comeback of Tesla, whose Tesla Model 3 emerged as the best-selling car overall, outperforming established favourites such as the Nissan Qashqai and Škoda Octavia.
The performance pushed Tesla into fourth place among brands in Slovenia, closing in on traditional market leaders like Volkswagen, Škoda and Renault.
The data also points to a wider shift toward low-emission vehicles, with plug-in hybrids rising by 82% and conventional hybrids by 26%, indicating a broader “greening” of the national fleet. Analysts suggest that rising fuel prices, partly linked to instability in the Middle East, may be accelerating the transition, though it remains to be seen whether the trend will sustain momentum in the months ahead.
