Croatia Ranks 5th Globally, Serbia and Albania Among Top 50 for English Proficiency

Croatia Joins Top 5, Serbia and Albania in Top 50 for English Proficiency

Croatia has made a significant leap in the EF English Proficiency Index 2024, climbing from 11th to 5th place among non-native English-speaking countries. The index is based on test results from 2.1 million adults aged 18 and over across 116 countries and regions.

With an EF score rising from 603 in 2023 to 607 in 2024, Croatia now sits in the ‘very high proficiency’ band. The Netherlands topped the index with a score of 636, followed by Norway in second place, Singapore in third, and Sweden in fourth. Croatia and Portugal share the fifth spot, completing the top tier of English-proficient nations.

Denmark, Greece, Austria, and Germany rounded out the global top 10. At the bottom of the list were Yemen, Somalia, and Côte d’Ivoire.

In the Adria region, two other countries made the top 50. Serbia ranked 24th, while Albania secured the 43rd spot, showcasing strong regional progress in English proficiency.
