Bosnia’s Diplomatic Overture to Spain

As Bosnia and Herzegovina eyes EU accession, Madrid and Sarajevo strengthen ties on trade, tourism, and shared European ambitions

In a timely diplomatic stride, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Foreign Minister, Elmedin Konaković, is on an official visit to Spain, engaging in high-level talks with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares Bueno.

The two-day visit, continuing today, underscores a rekindling of bilateral momentum as both nations reaffirm a bond rooted in political goodwill and a shared European future.

Central to their discussions is Spain’s steadfast support for Bosnia’s EU integration — a process still fraught with complexity but buoyed by allies like Madrid.

Economic cooperation, trade, and tourism have also emerged as key pillars ripe for development between the two countries.

This marks the first visit of its kind from Bosnia’s top officials to Spain since 2017, reflecting a renewed diplomatic vigour.

Conversely, Minister Bueno’s trip to Sarajevo in April 2023 laid the groundwork for today’s dialogue.

As Europe wrestles with its next phase of enlargement, this meeting signals Bosnia’s enduring commitment to the European path — with Spain as a crucial partner along the way.
