Montenegro and German Bundestag Officials Discuss European Future

Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović has reaffirmed the country’s goal of completing its EU accession negotiations and becoming the European Union’s 28th member by 2028 during talks with Anton Hofreiter, Chairman of the German Bundestag’s Committee on European Union Affairs

The meeting focused on the final stage of Montenegro’s European path, ongoing reforms and the next steps towards full EU membership. Hofreiter has chaired the Bundestag’s EU Affairs Committee since 2021.

Milatović said dialogue with the German parliament would continue, recalling that he addressed the Bundestag’s EU Affairs Committee in Berlin in April and announced another visit to the German capital in the coming period to further strengthen support for Montenegro’s accession efforts.

He also highlighted recent discussions with German media on reforms, the rule of law and Montenegro’s future role within the EU.

Germany remains one of Montenegro’s key partners in the accession process. Montenegro has so far provisionally closed 18 of its 33 negotiating chapters, and Milatović has repeatedly said that the country aims to complete the negotiations and join the EU by 2028.
