World Bank Approves $600 Million Programme to Develop Serbia’s Gas Sector

The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved $600 million for a programme aimed at strengthening the security, reliability and resilience of Serbia’s energy supply through investments in strategic gas infrastructure, sector reforms and stronger institutions

The programme will be implemented over ten years through a Multiphase Programmatic Approach, with other development partners and private-sector representatives expected to participate. Its priorities include addressing bottlenecks in gas transmission, improving underground gas storage infrastructure and strengthening regulatory and planning frameworks in line with Serbia’s future EU accession.

According to the World Bank, natural gas will continue to play an important role during Serbia’s energy transition, as the country gradually reduces its reliance on coal and petroleum products while increasing the use of alternative and renewable energy sources.

The institution said the programme is expected to benefit households, businesses, industrial consumers and district heating systems across Serbia.

The first phase will receive €170 million, equivalent to $195.5 million, to improve the security and reliability of gas supplies, beginning with the Trupale–Pojate main gas pipeline. The initial phase will also support the development of organisational, institutional and technical capacities in Serbia’s gas sector.
