Montenegro to Modernise Power Grid with €35 Million EBRD Loan

EBRD's funding will enable smart grid technology and renewable energy integration, boosting efficiency and reducing outages

In a significant leap towards energy modernisation, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved a €35 million loan to Montenegro’s power distribution network, CEDIS.

The funds will facilitate the installation of an advanced SCADA/ADMS system and the deployment of smart meters across the country, marking a crucial step in the digitalisation of Montenegro’s energy infrastructure.

This upgrade aims to enhance grid reliability, reduce technical losses by up to 10%, and cut power outages by six times compared to previous years.

The project, partly funded by a €5 million EU grant, will also empower consumers with better insights into energy consumption, fostering efficiency and savings.

With greater integration of renewable energy sources, the modernisation aligns with European environmental standards, contributing to Montenegro’s broader energy transition goals.

As CEDIS looks to strengthen its infrastructure, the initiative promises long-term sustainability and resilience, positioning Montenegro as a leader in regional energy reform.
