Lidl Expands in Montenegro

Lidl’s growing presence in Montenegro has sparked both excitement and protest, as the German retail giant plans new stores and logistical hubs while displacing small local businesses

In a significant move, Lidl Crna Gora has received approval to build a major retail and warehouse facility in Zeta, adding to its expanding footprint in the country.

The new site will cover 2,584 square meters of above-ground space and is part of the company’s broader strategy to increase its presence in Montenegro. This approval follows the purchase of land in Zeta, a region undergoing urban development adjustments.

Yet, Lidl’s rapid expansion is not without controversy. In Berane, protests erupted after the company acquired land previously home to small local businesses, with owners expressing concerns over their livelihoods being jeopardized.

Despite these objections, the local government affirmed that the sale adhered to legal protocols.

Lidl’s ambitious plans also include the construction of a logistics center, further cementing its investment in the region.

However, the displacement of small businesses remains a thorny issue as the retail giant consolidates its position in Montenegro’s competitive market.
