Angela Merkel’s Memoirs Become Germany’s Best-Selling Book

Angela Merkel's memoirs have quickly become Germany's top-selling book of the year, captivating readers across the country

Angela Merkel’s memoirs have already become the best-selling book of the year in Germany, just ten days after their launch, local media reported.

Freedom: Memoirs 1954-2021 details the former chancellor’s childhood in communist East Germany, her political rise within the Christian Democrats (CDU), her election as Germany’s first female chancellor, and her 16 years in office.

According to data from the analytics company Media Control, the 736-page book, co-authored by Beate Bauman, Merkel’s longtime advisor, has topped bestseller lists with 200,000 copies sold.

“No other book has had such a spectacular start this year,” said Ulrike Altig, CEO of Media Control, as reported by Deutsche Welle.

An analysis reveals that buyers are relatively evenly split between men and women across all age groups.
