Nova Gorica and Gorizia Bridge Borders as European Capitals of Culture

Once divided by borders, the cities of Nova Gorica and Gorizia now celebrate shared history, culture, and reconciliation as they embark on their journey as the first-ever transnational European Capital of Culture

In a vibrant display of unity, Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia in Italy launched their year as the first-ever transnational European Capital of Culture.

On 8th February, a joyous procession called “From Station to Station” marked the occasion, with dancers, musicians, and carnival groups crossing the border from one city’s train station to the other.

The event brought together communities from both sides, including the Slovene minority in Italy, to celebrate the bond that transcends borders.

The ceremony held deep historical resonance, honouring a period of division and conflict, and was a powerful symbol of peace.

Both cities, long linked by commerce and culture, now embark on a journey of deeper cooperation.

Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar, marking the historic occasion on Slovenia’s national cultural day, spoke of the deep emotional significance of the event, while Italian President Sergio Mattarella described it as a milestone for both countries and the European Union, celebrating long-standing friendship and reconciliation.

By the end of the year, the cities will host around 400 events, with a key focus on examining the tumultuous 20th-century history of this multicultural region.
