Slovenian President Pirc Musar Makes Historic State Visit to Mongolia

On 20 August, President Nataša Pirc Musar began a historic three-day state visit to Mongolia, marking the first time a Slovenian head of state has visited the country

The visit aims to strengthen dialogue and enhance both bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two nations.

Accompanied by a business delegation, President Pirc Musar discussed opportunities for collaboration in various sectors, including business, tourism, research, climate change mitigation, sustainable development, and women’s empowerment. In a meeting with Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh, she emphasized the shared commitment of both countries to democracy, the rule of law, and human rights, highlighting their mutual support for multilateralism and international law.

The two leaders noted that Slovenia and Mongolia face similar challenges, such as severe weather events, which underscore the need for closer cooperation. Pirc Musar expressed pride in Slovenia’s ability to share expertise in sustainable forest management with Mongolia, particularly through initiatives focused on empowering women in rural areas. She also mentioned Slovenia’s recent training of Mongolian peacekeepers on gender equality.

The visit includes a business forum on 21 August, where the Slovenian delegation will explore opportunities in the Mongolian market, joined by companies already operating in the region, such as Krka and Medex. Pirc Musar’s visit follows Mongolian Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh’s attendance at a diplomatic conference in Slovenia in May 2023, where the Ljubljana-The Hague convention on combatting international crime was adopted.
