Teja Oblak Joins Portland Fire Ahead of WNBA Expansion Season

The Slovenian national team captain is set to reunite with a familiar face as she takes the next step in her career across the Atlantic.

Teja Oblak, a veteran point guard and leader of Slovenia’s women’s national basketball team, has signed with the Portland Fire, one of the newest franchises preparing to enter the WNBA next season. The move marks a significant milestone in her career, bringing years of European experience into a rapidly growing league.

Currently playing for Galatasaray, where she secured the EuroLeague Women title last year, Oblak arrives in Portland with a strong track record built across multiple European leagues.

Her transition will also see her reunite with Slovenian executive Vanja Černivec, recently appointed general manager of the expansion team, adding a layer of continuity to the move.

Oblak’s signing highlights a broader Slovenian presence in the WNBA, alongside players such as Jessica Shepard and emerging talent Ajša Sivka. As the league prepares for its upcoming season, her arrival underscores both the internationalisation of the competition and the increasing visibility of players from the region on the global stage.
