Slovenia has symbolically inaugurated a new railway line connecting Divača and the port city of Koper, completing the country’s largest infrastructure project in recent years. The €1.1 billion investment introduces a new 27.1-kilometre track designed to increase freight capacity and improve connections between the port and Central Europe.
The new railway is expected to significantly transform cargo transport from the Port of Koper.
Freight capacity could double to around 30 million tonnes per year, with more than 200 trains running daily, while travel time on the section will fall from roughly 100 minutes to about 30 minutes.
Officials say the project will strengthen the port’s competitiveness and improve European transport connections, while also contributing to economic growth. The railway received substantial support from the European Union, which financed about 35% of the total cost.
