Medieval Monuments in Kosovo Remain on UNESCO’s Endangered List

UNESCO has decided to keep the medieval monuments in Kosovo and Metohija on the List of World Heritage in Danger

This decision was made during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held in New Delhi.

The committee cited political instability in the region as one of the main threats justifying this decision. The review of the conservation status of these monuments has been postponed to the next committee session.

The committee’s document requests that the state party, in collaboration with UNMIK, submit an updated report on the state of conservation of the property by 1 February 2025, for consideration at the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee.

The cultural property “Medieval Monuments in Kosovo” was inscribed on the UNESCO List of World Heritage in Danger in 2006 at Serbia’s initiative, and includes the Dečani Monastery, Gračanica Monastery, the Patriarchate of Peć, and the Church of the Virgin of Ljeviš.
