Smrekar will serve a two-year term as he takes the helm of the prominent business chamber.
The election, held during a particularly symbolic event, coincided with the 25th anniversary of AmCham Slovenia’s founding on 9 September 1999. Ajša Vodnik, CEO of AmCham Slovenia and Chair of AmChams in Europe, reflected on the organisation’s quarter-century milestone, stating, “Throughout the year, we have celebrated our 25th anniversary, but it is today, exactly 25 years ago, that AmCham Slovenia was officially established. From the very beginning, we have been driven by one goal – to make Slovenia a better place for living and business, guided by our core values.”
Among the distinguished guests was Melania Arreaga, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy, who offered her congratulations to AmCham Slovenia for its continued success. She highlighted the chamber’s pivotal role in fostering key connections and uncovering new opportunities.
In his inaugural address, Smrekar emphasised the importance of collaboration, which he views not only as a strategic priority but as a foundation for a thriving society. He noted that cooperation fuels innovation and progress, essential elements for Slovenia’s growth. He also underscored his commitment to sustainable leadership that gives back to the community and voiced strong support for the YOUng platform, which is designed to nurture future leaders.
In a nod to the significance of experience, Smrekar highlighted the need to invest in older employees, stating, “In a world where life expectancy is increasing, we must harness the knowledge of older generations and provide them with opportunities for continued growth and contribution to society.”
Smrekar’s election marks a new chapter for AmCham Slovenia as it celebrates its 25th anniversary while looking ahead to the future of business and leadership in the country.
