Albania Lags Behind in Online Banking Adoption

Albania ranks lowest in the Western Balkans for online banking usage, with only a small share of citizens relying on digital platforms for financial services.

Despite the rapid expansion of fintech and e-payments in the region, traditional in-person transactions still dominate in Albania. Experts warn that stronger efforts in digital literacy and infrastructure are needed to close the gap.

The trend has regional implications, as neighboring economies increasingly move toward digital banking integration. While other countries are strengthening cross-border payment systems, Albania’s slower adoption may limit its ability to attract foreign investment and fully align with EU financial standards.
