Talat Xhaferi Breaks Ground as First Albanian to Lead North Macedonia’s Interim Government

A Historic Appointment in North Macedonia: Talat Xhaferi Takes the Helm as First Albanian Prime Minister of a Technical Government

In a groundbreaking political development, Talat Xhaferi has been appointed as the Prime Minister of North Macedonia’s interim government, marking the first time an ethnic Albanian has ascended to this pivotal role in the country’s political arena.

Xhaferi’s tenure at the top will be a focused 100-day period leading up to the elections scheduled for May 8th, a time frame critical for the nation’s democratic processes.

Addressing the Assembly, Xhaferi pledged an unwavering commitment to his duties, irrespective of the duration of his term. “No matter how long I am at the helm of the Government, I shall do everything within my power to fulfill my responsibilities, in accordance with the Constitution and the expectations of the citizens,” he stated. His primary focus, he emphasized, will be on ensuring the parliamentary and presidential elections are conducted in an orderly and democratic manner.

Xhaferi’s nomination by the largest party in the ruling coalition, the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), led by the outgoing Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski, follows the stipulations of the Government Law, which confers this privilege to the leading coalition party.

In his government’s agenda, Xhaferi has highlighted the paramount importance of successfully orchestrating free, fair, and democratic elections for the first round of presidential elections on April 24th and the second round of presidential and parliamentary elections on May 8th. Additionally, he is committed to advancing all processes stemming from the ongoing accession negotiations with the EU and accelerating European integration efforts.

This momentous occasion in North Macedonian politics not only underscores the nation’s dedication to democratic values and procedures but also reflects a significant stride towards inclusivity and representation within its governmental structure, setting a precedent for future generations.
