The government of Slovenia has approved nearly €59 million in funding for six projects aimed at modernising the country’s electricity grid and supporting the expansion of renewable energy. The projects, co-financed by the European Union Modernisation Fund, are worth almost €174 million in total and will be implemented by the national transmission operator ELES and regional distribution companies.
According to Energy Minister Bojan Kumer, strengthening the grid is essential for the energy transition, enabling faster integration of renewable sources while improving the reliability and security of electricity supply.
Some projects focus on upgrading urban and industrial distribution networks, while others target improvements to high-voltage transmission infrastructure.
Despite the new investments, much larger funding will be required in the coming years. Under the national investment plan, nearly €4 billion is expected to be invested in the distribution network by 2034 to expand capacity and modernise existing infrastructure.
