Serbia Eyes Nuclear Power Plant by 2040 After Talks with Rosatom

Energy minister discusses long term cooperation and nuclear development plans

Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović met with Alexey Likhachev – Director General of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom – to discuss potential cooperation in the development of nuclear energy in Serbia. The talks focused on building a nuclear power plant that could be connected to the national grid by 2040, as part of efforts to ensure long term energy security and diversification of supply.

Officials highlighted that nuclear energy could provide stable baseload electricity and contribute to reducing carbon emissions, while strengthening Serbia’s energy independence. The meeting also covered knowledge transfer, training of domestic experts, and the development of regulatory and safety frameworks required for a future nuclear program.

The ministry emphasized that the project remains in the preparatory phase and that any further steps will depend on detailed feasibility studies, public debate, and alignment with international safety standards.
