Secret Tunnel From 1944 to Become A New Attraction

A hidden tunnel under St. John’s Fortress in Šibenik, built by the German army in 1944, is set to be transformed into a unique historical attraction.

The 70-metre-long tunnel, originally designed as an air raid shelter, will offer visitors an immersive experience with sound and visual effects rather than conventional exhibits.

Excavated entirely by hand, the tunnel runs from the base of the fortress to its star-shaped upper section, ending in a polygonal bunker.

Artefacts from various military occupants have been discovered, and restoration efforts aim to maintain the tunnel’s original character.

Located 120 metres above the city, St. John’s Fortress is a key cultural landmark. The project emphasizes “conflict archaeology,” giving the public rare access to Second World War remnants and highlighting Croatia’s wartime history.
