New Chief of Slovenian Armed Forces Appointed

Brigadier-General Boštjan Močnik Takes Helm of SAF, Bringing Extensive International Experience

Brigadier-General Boštjan Močnik has been appointed as the new chief of the general staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF), succeeding Lieutenant-General Robert Glavaš. Močnik, 51, has served with the SAF since 1998 and has led the Force Command since 2023, overseeing operations in Slovenia and abroad. His career includes missions in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Afghanistan, as well as leadership roles in strategic planning and capability development.

Defence Minister Borut Sajovic highlighted Močnik’s strong leadership skills and extensive operational experience, describing him as well-positioned to guide the SAF through ongoing modernisation efforts.

Experts note that his main challenges will include troop recruitment, adapting to evolving security threats, and balancing the priorities of political leaders with strategic defence objectives.

President Nataša Pirc Musar, the SAF’s commander-in-chief, endorsed the appointment and is expected to promote Močnik to major general by year-end. With general elections approaching, his tenure could be influenced by any future government changes, although the current administration has signalled stability in military leadership.
