Croatian Comedy Svadba Smashes Box-Office Records With Historic Opening Weekend

Igor Šeregi’s film becomes the most-watched Croatian production ever in its debut, drawing huge regional audiences

The Croatian comedy Svadba (The Wedding) has made cinema history by achieving the strongest opening weekend ever recorded for a domestic film in Croatia. From its premiere in Zagreb on January 20 through the end of its first weekend, the film attracted 170,496 viewers in Croatian cinemas, setting an all-time record for a Croatian production, according to the Croatian Audiovisual Centre.

Directed and written by Igor Šeregi and produced by Eclectica, Svadba has generated unprecedented audience interest across the region, with an estimated combined total of about 219,563 viewers in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina during its first weekend.

Even before its official release, ticket sales soared—with over 70,000 sold ahead of the first screening—illustrating strong demand that helped the film outpace many international blockbusters.

Producers and distributors have celebrated the success as a major boost for the Croatian film industry. Šeregi expressed pride in the team’s achievement and hopes these figures will encourage more domestic comedies and commercially oriented films. The strong performance also highlights wide public interest in local cinema and sets Svadba up for further premieres throughout the Balkans, including scheduled showings in Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Ljubljana.
