HAC Announces Tender for New Dual-Purpose Krk Bridge and Rail Project

Croatian Highways (HAC) has initiated an open tender process for the preparation of study and traffic documentation, essential for acquiring a location permit for the proposed new Krk Bridge, along with its access roads.

The project, as reported by Novi list, is a preparatory step for constructing a dual-purpose bridge, accommodating both road and rail transport. This bridge will lead to a new port terminal planned in Omišalj.

Outlined in the spatial plan of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County for some time, companies interested in producing the study documentation have until January 29 to submit their proposals to HAC.

The bridge design includes separate lanes for road vehicles and a dedicated railway line corridor to Krk Island. Based on early designs, the bridge will be structured on two levels – the upper for vehicular traffic and the lower for the railway line.

The bridge is intended to cross the Mala Vrata channel, ending at the Laterna peninsula. Even after the new bridge’s construction, the existing Krk Bridge will remain operational, although its traffic load is expected to decrease significantly.

The entire development, from studies to construction, is anticipated to take a minimum of five years. Environmental impact assessments and feasibility studies for such extensive projects typically consume up to two years and three years, respectively.

Following these preparatory phases, construction tenders will be issued, leading to the commencement of the actual building work. This timeline was outlined by Gregor Mihelčić, HAC’s project design manager.
