Krk Achieves Zero Waste Certification, Leading the Way in Sustainable Waste Management

The Croatian island of Krk has become the second island globally, following Tilos in Greece, to be awarded a Zero Waste certification

This recognition, granted by Zero Waste Europe (Mission Zero Academy), celebrates exceptional efforts in sustainable waste practices across Krk’s seven municipalities: Krk, Baška, Dobrinj, Malinska-Dubašnica, Omišalj, Punat, and Vrbnik.

Since 2021, Krk’s journey toward certification has involved rigorous commitment from local authorities and Krk’s municipal waste management company, Ponikve, alongside Zero Waste Croatia, the national certification coordinator. Key initiatives have included analyzing mixed municipal waste composition, promoting home composting, establishing volume-based payments, and setting up a council dedicated to waste management.

While Krk’s certification represents the first of five achievement levels within the Zero Waste program, Mission Zero Academy’s auditors see it as a solid foundation for ongoing improvements. The award underscores Krk’s position as a leader in Europe’s sustainable waste movement.
