Bulgaria and Romania to Join Schengen Area as Full Members in 2025

A historic step for Europe as Bulgaria and Romania secure full Schengen membership

In a landmark development for both the European Union and the two nations, Bulgaria and Romania will officially become full members of the Schengen Area on 1 January 2025. This move marks the end of internal border controls with and between these countries, heralding a new era of free movement within the EU.

The decision, which was unanimously approved by EU member states today, represents a significant milestone for both countries and the EU as a whole.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, celebrated the moment as a major triumph, highlighting the role of the Schengen Area in strengthening internal markets, boosting tourism, and fostering greater unity within Europe.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola also welcomed the decision, stressing that a more robust Schengen Area will contribute to a safer and more cohesive Europe. The move follows Austria’s decision to lift its veto, clearing the final hurdle in what has been a long-awaited process.
