Prekmurska Gibanica Named Slovenia’s Top Traditional Dish

Slovenia's rich culinary tradition shines with prekmurska gibanica crowned the nation’s top traditional dish, according to TasteAtlas

Slovenia’s culinary crown goes to prekmurska gibanica, a beloved dessert from the Prekmurje region, celebrated as the best traditional food in the country. Known for its rich layers of strudel dough, apples, cottage cheese, walnuts, and poppy seeds, this iconic pastry has been a staple at weddings since its first recorded mention in 1828.

According to TasteAtlas, an online guide to traditional cuisine, pastries dominate Slovenia’s culinary rankings, with krofi—or doughnuts—earning second place and the famous Bled cream cake (kremna rezina) taking third. The portal notes that krofi were likely the first European-style doughnuts, influencing similar treats across the continent.

These rankings highlight Slovenia’s rich tradition of sweet delicacies, showcasing the country’s passion for preserving its unique culinary heritage.
