EU Beer Production Declines, Germany Remains Top Producer

In 2023, EU beer production declined by 5% while non-alcoholic beer production rose by 13.5%, with Germany remaining the top producer and the Netherlands the leading exporter

In 2023, the European Union produced 32.5 billion liters of beer containing alcohol and an additional 1.8 billion liters of low-alcohol or alcohol-free beer, totaling 34.3 billion liters. 

According to Eurostat, the production of alcoholic beer in the EU decreased by 5% (-1.7 billion liters) compared to 2022. In contrast, the production of non-alcoholic beer saw a 13.5% increase (+0.2 billion liters) from the previous year.

Following Germany were Spain with 4 billion liters (12.4%), Poland with 3.5 billion liters (10.8%), the Netherlands with 2.4 billion liters (7.5%), and Belgium with 2 billion liters (6.3%).

Germany retained its position as the largest producer of alcoholic beer in 2023, with 7.2 billion liters, accounting for 22.3% of the EU’s total production

The Netherlands continued to lead as the top exporter of alcoholic beer, exporting a total of 1.8 billion liters in 2023, representing 21.5% of the EU’s total beer exports. This marks a slight decrease of 0.1 billion liters compared to 2022. Belgium and the Netherlands each exported 1.4 billion liters, while the Czech Republic and Ireland both exported 0.5 billion liters.

France remained the largest importer of alcoholic beer in the EU in 2023, with imports totaling 0.9 billion liters, accounting for 17.1% of the EU’s total imports. Other significant importers included Italy with over 0.7 billion liters, and Spain, the Netherlands, and Germany, each importing nearly 0.6 billion liters.
